MINTAGE: 19,480,000 (Ranking 39/77)
POPULAR VARIETIES: One or more dies have the often seen die crack from wingtip to rim.
RARITY: 1928(P) is common in all circulated grades. Mint State pieces are sufficiently available that an original roll or two may still exist, though any such rolls that surface would quickly be broken up for submission to the grading services.
Of the 18 examples certified MS-67, all but one have full bands.
COMMENTS: Fully struck gems form enough of the Uncirculated population to meet demand. Although the mintage for this date is lower than for most āPā Mint dimes of the 1920s, there seems to be no shortage of these coins.
The reader should bear in mind when examining the current retail values for 1928(P) and other common dates that such coins in Good condition seldom bring the published price. The current valuation of $1.50 includes a reasonable service charge applied only when a dealer takes the trouble to individually package a coin and advertise it by date and mint. More often, such low value coins are tossed into a box containing other silver dimes offered at fixed prices ranging from 50 cents to $1, depending on the average quality of the coins contained in it and on the prevailing spot price of silver.
