  • WB-101. LARGE MINTMARK. (1 TAIL DIE)
This tail die was used in the previous year paired with a head die dated 1859. (Breen-4900)
  • WB-102. MEDIUM MINTMARK. (1 TAIL DIE)
A rare early die state for this marriage can be found where the head die has full drapery detail and the mintmark shows signs of recutting north of the final placement (See [Gobrecht Journal issue 52, page 39]). The normal die state for this marriage is a partial drapery (outer line only) head die and all signs of repunched mintmark have been abraded away on the tail die. (Breen-4901)

COMMENTS:

  • All 1860-S Liberty Seated Half Dollars examined have been well struck. However, normally sharp details appear worn on many pieces due to excessive die wear.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Unless other marriages are discovered, it appears that the average coinage per die for 1860-S was a very large 236,000 coins.
  • For additional information on the Guatemala Hoard coins, see the Miscellaneous Notes section at the beginning of this chapter.
