COMMENTS: Mintage is high and many were saved. Strike is rarely less than average. Luster is bright with lots of eye appeal. Abrasions are minimal. Proof issues have the same characteristics of the earlier proofs. This date is well known for its “AW monogram” and “without AW monogram” varieties, caused by excessive die polishing. Probably more common without than with the initials. Unlike the 1936 to 1940 proofs which are scarce without the monogram, the 1941 and 1942 proofs are commonly seen both ways. Investment potential is average for MS65 and higher grades.
