Our final 2018 auction features The 1873 Collection. The year of 1873 is a special one for coins as it was the year that the United States entered into the Gold Standard as the backing of our nation's currency. In addition, there were a number of coins that were produced at extremely low mintage rates, causing there to be a large number of truly scarce issues. This collection contains a fantastic offering of pieces from this special numismatic year and we're proud to offer it together in our auction closing this week.

Some of the more interesting highlights from this week's sale include:

The first highlight is an 1873 $3 PCGS/CAC Proof 64 DCAM (Open 3). A beautiful Deep Cameo example of this scarce date. With an estimated total mintage of 40 to 50 pieces, only a dozen or so Open 3 variety examples can be accounted for today. The present piece is an exception coin with full mint frost. The coin would almost certainly plus if re-submitted in today's market with an outside shot at a 65 Deep Cameo. Alas, we're happy with the current presentation and think that the buyer would be as well.

Our second highlight is an 1873 $5 PCGS Proof 61 (Closed 3, OGH). Like the other gold denominations of this scarce date, just 25 pieces were produced. Approximately a dozen can be traced today, with very few coins entering the market at any point. This example is housed in an old green PCGS holder and is a rare opportunity for an extremely scarce date.

Our third highlight is an 1873-CC $10 NGC AU50. This coin is one of the rarest dates in the series, with a mintage of 4,543. In fact, it is the fourth lowest, behind an elusive group of pieces. No examples in uncirculated condition survived the heavy wear that issues of this mint and decade endured. This AU50 example exhibits flashy, yellow luster with decent eye appeal.

The fourth highlight is an 1873 $10 NGC AU55. Ron Guth writes that, "there are few eagles rarer than the 1873 Close 3," and its mintage of just 800 coins make it the "lowest of any eagle up until that time" with the 1875 and 1877 coming in at even fewer later in the decade. Often overlooked by collectors and dealers, the date is appreciated by specialists as PCGS suggests that only 30 to 35 pieces are known, with only a single example that survives as uncirculated. This rare, elusive offering of this date is an opportunity appreciated by the rare gold specialists.

This final highlight is an 1873-CC $20 NGC AU58. A lovely example with frosty mint luster, this date is the last of the conditionally rare early dates in the Carson City Double Eagle collection.
