Coins We Love: Active Yet Calm
Last weekend’s visit to the local Tidewater Coin Club Show was an enjoyable one for us. While it’s not as big as the hustling and bustling national shows we typically attend, it was nice for our staff to get a few hours away to see what a live coin show is like. We had a number of folks who don't travel to coin shows make their way over and check it out. Unfortunately, the grandeur and decorations of the national shows wasn’t present, but we had a quality show overall and enjoyed seeing many of our local friends in the hobby.
As many of you saw, we had a nice auction end on Sunday night, but the website activity wasn’t limited to that over the weekend. We had a number of customers on the site throughout the weekend and our Monday turned into an avalanche of orders. It felt like someone turned the spigot on and coins became cool again. I’m not sure what changed, but we had a fantastic amount of activity on Monday and it was a pleasant return to the hot market of a few years ago.
Overall, the coin market is still doing just fine. The Fall and Winter activity typically slows down a tad, but the upcoming election has drawn a lot of eyes. Overall, I’m not sure where things will go once we have results in November, but we’ll be prepared either way and will keep moving forward with business as usual. One thing that we have seen lately is that the record high prices of gold have increased our bullion-related business and we’re getting calls on this regularly. We don’t offer this via our website as it’s a limited offering situation for us, but we’ve been pleased with what has been coming to us. MANY folks with smaller collections are reaching out to sell at these high levels…and I can’t blame them! While we have just a single major show left this Winter (Baltimore in November), dealers are still active in the trading market and it helps us to keep our pulse on how things are looking. It’s still difficult to locate rare, high-end material, but if you’re searching for it, you can find it, it just takes a little more work and effort in today’s market.
Next week JC, Andy, JC, and Wes will be making their way down to the South Carolina Show in Greenville for a few days. While making pit stops along the way to visit a few shops and customers, we hope to come back with some goodies! If you’re on the way or want to meet with any of us there, please don’t hesitate! We’d love to see you in the Palmetto State.
The remainder of this week is a little calmer as we catch up in the office. We’re excited to launch the Stockyard Collection into auction today! The Stockyard Collection, unironically bought in an old cattle barn, includes 174 coins being offered with No Reserve in our Sunday, November 3rd Auction. This group offers something for everyone, from classic U.S. silver and gold coins to modern US Mint products. A truly impressive variety that is sure to attract collectors of all levels, presenting the opportunity to fill gaps in many collections. This week's CWL also features a huge special on MS67 Red Lincoln Cents. A perennially popular series, this offering is sure to turn some heads with huge discounts on over 200 coins in our inventory!
Numismatically Yours,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC
