Coins We Love - April 19
It’s spring break for most families here in Virginia Beach, and we’ve been operating with a slightly less than full office this week. If you’re having a hard time getting in touch with us, please be patient and we’ll certainly catch up. And, if you’re unfortunate enough to get me on the phone, I’ll do my best to offer the service the rest of DLRC always offers!
For the loyal readers of CWL that caught last week’s Masters version, I hope that you watched the Sunday event in Augusta. When my wife gets caught up in a golf tournament, you know something special is occurring! As for those readers who were able to attend (yes, there were a few of those!), I hope you enjoyed a pimento cheese sandwich and Diet Coke for me. I hope to see you there next year!
This coming week we are planning on attending the Central States Show in Schaumburg, Illinois. We’ll be attending Wednesday-Friday, and Gary will be hanging around through Saturday. Why we love it: A gorgeously toned ultra-gem cameo example of this scarce proof issue Three Cent Silver. This coin features nearly perfect cameo surfaces that seem almost completely blemish-free. The toning displayed here is absolutely captivating with its electric blue highlights with hues of gold and rose. From an extremely low mintage of just 600 coins struck in which only one example is graded finer by NGC with cameo surfaces.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide sits at $13,500, but this NGC-graded example is available for bidding with the low reserve of just $8,975 in this week’s auction. That is a generous discount of well over $4,000 off the PCGS Price Guide value for this beautifully toned cameo gem example.
Why we love it: A popular and desirable Large Eagle Bust Dollar type coin whose rarity becomes quite notable as it nears Mint State. This high-end AU example displays fresh and original surfaces with light wear on the high points and tons of luster. Those characteristics, along with its lovely natural toning, make for ideal eye appeal.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide sits at $13,500 with the CPG coming in at $16,300. In addition, the wholesale CDN bid level comes in at $13,500! This NGC-graded example is in our eyes an excellent value and is available for bidding with the low reserve amount of just $10,500 in auction ending this Sunday. That is a considerable discount of $3,000 off the far more reasonable PCGS Price Guide value.
Why we love it: The 1877 is the key date in the Indian Cent series and has long been desired among nearly all collectors of U.S. coins. This near-gem example is covered evenly by some attractive brown toning with pristine red surfaces shining through. Between its unique, original coloring and its evident, frosty luster, this famous key date presents premium eye appeal. Its high-quality and beauty was recognized by both CAC and Eagle Eye.
Value: The CPG registers a value of $10,000 for a CAC-approved example with the PCGS Price Guide at $8,000 and $15,000 in the next grade up. This popular and desirable key date is available at $8,750 via Make Offer. That is only $750 above the PCGS Price Guide value for MS64 and over $6,000 below the value of the grade above, even with its CAC Sticker and Eagle Eye Photo Seal recognizing it as high-end for the grade and under-graded.
Why we love it: The famous and rare Gobrecht Dollar though described by some as a pattern, is popular and highly sought-after amongst collectors of all types. This arguably under-graded CAC approved example possess the smallest amount of wear imaginable that otherwise displays high-end surface quality and rich natural toning. This scarce iconic issue comes from a mintage of only 1,000 pieces.
Value: The most recent sale of the same date and CAC approved grade combination came in auction in 2018 and went for $22,200. That number is also right on par with the PCGS Price Guide value of $22,000 but we are still undercutting that by a thousand, leaving a fantastic value for the potential buyer at $21,000 via Make Offer for this incredible Gobrecht Dollar.
Why we love it: A scarce early date from the Liberty Quarter Eagle Series from a low mintage of just 6,784 pieces. It displays beautiful, original lustrous surfaces with satiny yellow-gold color. The slightest amount of cabinet friction is noticeable on the high points of the hair and the Eagle's leg, otherwise this CAC approved beauty could pass as Mint State.
Value: This example is not only perfect for such an ideal grade, but another has not sold at auction in well over a decade showing how the coin is so scarce that it’s rarely ever seen on the market at all. The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $5,250 and $8,500 in the next grade up. This beautiful CAC approved slider is reserved fairly at just $5,750 in this week’s auction and has already met reserve!
Why we love it: A beautiful and original gem example of this scarce Liberty Seated Quarter issue with lovely mirrors. Pretty smoky blue and gray hues lightly cover these pristine, mark-free surfaces making for fantastic eye appeal. From a low proof mintage of just 1,000 coins struck in which only one other example is graded finer by PCGS.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide is in the ballpark with their evaluation of $5,200 with the plus grade, although they do not factor in a premium for CAC approval. Even with a CAC Sticker, we have a best price set for this gorgeous proof Seated Quarter at only $4,500 through our Make Offer function.
Why we love it: A popular Morgan Dollar Issue that is a sought-after key date especially in uncirculated grades. This CAC-approved near-gem example is simply soaking in luster, blast white and is free of detracting marks. Some chatter on the cheek keeps it from entering a 65 holder but this must be the nicest surface quality and eye appeal a 64 can offer.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide and CPG Value are comparable and accurate on their evaluations at a respective $9,500 and $9,250, although they do not factor in a premium for CAC approval. Even with a CAC Sticker we are proudly offering this stunner in this week’s auction reserved at just $8,750.
Why we love it: The well-known key to the proof Silver Eagle Series struck as part of a small mintage of just 30,125 pieces at the West Point Mint. Graded PF70 UCAM, this coin is the definition of perfection.
Value: The last two auction records for this key date Silver Eagle are $12,600 and $13,800 along with a PCGS Price Guide value of $16,250. We feel that a best price of $13,000 via Make Offer for our perfect NGC graded example creates an excellent value.
Why we love it: This week’s auction offers a handful of shipwreck issues, but none are scarcer than this popular Pioneer gold issue recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck that comes with the box and certificate of authenticity. This lustrous AU example displays light wear with otherwise lovely eye appeal. Its coloring is unique yet pretty, and the strike is quite respectable in its strength. This is certainly a numismatic treasure that would stand out in mostly any collection.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide is pretty much on point with an estimate of $13,000. That is a reasonable price point for a coin of such historical importance and rarity and that is shown well by the fact that the reserve has already been met!
Why we love it: The Closed 3 variety of the popular Three-Cent Nickel Issue is a slightly scarcer issue. This gem is mostly white with a faint golden skin that is highlighted by blazing luster and no major blemishes making it true to its grade. The eye appeal is everything you could possibly expect from the issue.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide and CPG Value are comparable and accurate on their evaluations at a respective $1,050 and $1,060. Although, we are offering a best price for this lustrous gem at $100 lower at $950 via our Make Offer Function.
Why we love it: A gorgeous near-gem type coin of the Proof Indian Cent Series from a low mintage of just 3,575 coins struck. This piece is a beautiful representation of its grade and features such unique, captivating eye appeal from its rich vibrant colors.
Value: The most recent auction record of this date and grade combination came in an auction earlier this month for $384. Additionally, the PCGS Price Guide is set just above at $425, which makes our best price via Make Offer of $375 reasonable for this pretty low mintage proof.
Why we love it: An affordable yet attractive CAC approved AU example of this better date Three-Cent Nickel. This wholesome coin is lightly toned, and a fair amount of luster remains along with wear that is barely visible. A choice AU piece with quite pleasing eye appeal from a low mintage of just 36,500 coins.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $215, but this CAC approved example is available for just $195 via Make Offer. That is a solid $20 discount off the PCGS Price Guide value for this low-cost example of this underrated lower mintage issue 3-Cent Nickel.
Why we love it: A bright white near-gem example of this popular commemorative issue that was minted to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the admission of California into the Union. From a lower mintage of just 86,394 coins struck, this piece has gone under-graded between its perfect luster and lack of obvious marks that make the eye appeal incredible.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $275, which is exactly what our best price is via our Make Offer Function. That is right on par with the PCGS Price Guide value for this lustrous stunning commemorative even with CAC approval.
Why we love it: A lightly golden toned gem example of this low mintage commemorative issue that was minted to celebrate the life of Booker T. Washington. This coin displays fantastic eye appeal from its blemish-free surfaces and incredible luster. This piece comes from a low, original mintage of only 6,004 coins struck.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $225, but this CAC approved example is available for the low price of just $175 via Make Offer. That is $50 below the PCGS Price Guide value for this gorgeous, lustrous example of this low mintage commemorative issue even with a CAC Sticker.
