Coins We Love: Diving In!

Personal Message from John Brush: The ballots for the ANA Board of Governors have started arriving this week! Making a difference with the ANA and the hobby of numismatics is far more involved than I initially estimated, so I'd appreciate your support in my re-election effort for a second term. I believe in the organization and the hobby and I hope that we can work together and continue the path forward that has begun in improving the ANA.

Wrapping up our foray on the West Coast, we were able to find quite a few more coins than we expected. The fact that everyone attending the event was there to either submit, buy, or sell coins, made it a show with a high success rate of doing business. We walked away with 3-4 boxes of new purchases, with items ranging in value from $50-$500,000. There were no 6-figure pieces in the acquisitions, but that wasn’t the goal.

My favorite coin that I came home with was a coin I wasn’t even looking for. It found me! In dealing with one of our favorite new(er) dealers, I came across a rather esoteric Charlotte gold issue, an 1839/8-C $2.5 PCGS/CAC XF40. Now, it’s not a coin that I think anyone would pinpoint as a key issue, but if you look at past auction appearances, there have only been a few in recent years, but only a single example was CAC-approved. This opportunity to snag the underrated variety was certainly not expected at this show, but I was thrilled to walk away with another coin to fill a hole in one of the variety-based sets in the D.L. Hansen Collection.

I know many of you will be disappointed to hear that we didn’t win (or lose) anything in the casino, but we figured our gambling was done on the bourse floor, so we got enough action there to scratch that itch. Unfortunately, there weren’t any worthwhile meals to write home about either (but there was Chick-fil-A and In-N-Out). Overall, the show that was put on was certainly a winner and the ease of doing business, the soundness of security, and the laidback atmosphere all worked together to create an overall pleasant event.

This week we’ve got our contingent in the Pittsburgh area attending the PAN show, with the office running on all cylinders, despite the 4-day week. By Friday, I suspect we’ll see a lot more excitement as the Diamondback Collection ends on Thursday evening and we’re kicking into gear with a few exciting announcements we’re throwing out next week. Overall, it’s an exciting time at DLRC and we hope that you enjoy some of the offerings in this week’s Coins We Love!

Numismatically Yours,

John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC
