Coins We Love: Don't Miss Out On Great Coins!

One of the things that I enjoy most about working at DLRC is that it’s not just my job. It’s truly my passion and what I enjoy doing as a hobby on my own. I often find myself going to coin events trying to be “undercover”, but that only lasts so long in most cases. Recently, I’ve enjoyed attending our local coin club, the Tidewater Coin Club with Wes. For a few months, I just sat in the back as a collector and enjoyed the educational speeches, the auctions, etc. However, a few of the guys knew who I was, and eventually I let my guard down (regarding DLRC) and enjoyed the club even more! I enjoy the camaraderie with fellow collectors who support the local coin scene and being around coin people in person, not just virtually.
I also find myself listening to podcasts and reading articles that my friends have done regarding the hobby and business. My wife thinks I’m a little nerdy when I’m in bed listening to a podcast about coins, but what can I say? It’s who I am and what my passion is. One thing I listened to this morning on my way to work was a podcast by a fellow dealer who is rather new to the industry. They were talking about helpful hints for collectors or dealers at their first coin show. The piece of advice that my friend offered was “when you see a coin that makes your heart skip a beat or that really speaks to you. You buy it.” We’re not talking about Morgan Dollars, in which there are thousands that look virtually the same, but when a rare coin shows up and speaks to you, it’s for you - You have to buy it. You might have to overpay for it, but it only leads to heartache when you miss out. Have I learned this lesson the hard way? Absolutely.
One of those was a 1913 V Nickel that we were considering for the Hansen Collection. It was in auction and there was a little bit of gamesmanship going on between bidders, and we didn’t pursue it as far as we probably should have. As a result of not stretching, we missed out on it. Yes, there are a few others available that come up every once in a while, but the timing has not been “right”, so that’s probably the biggest coin regret I’ve had. I am also reminded of two proof seated dollars that we needed to pursue for the Hansen Collection that came up in auction during a very busy time in the industry, and we could not get together on them, so we didn’t bid on or pursue them. Two weeks later, we were able to converse, and we realized what we missed out on. Well, now our set is incomplete! You can’t find other examples of these, and we’ve even offered a $5,000 bounty if we can buy one (if you know of the whereabouts of an 1801, 1841, or 1848 proof dollar, let us know!). There are always stories of the “coins that got away,” but in the end, I think the advice is sound. When you see the coin that you can’t leave behind, don’t leave it behind!
Elsewhere in the coin universe, we just launched a really neat collection of quarters, including some really high-end rare issues, in an upcoming Red Carpet Rarities Auction. This collection features a fantastic smattering of Seated Quarters, mostly graded by PCGS with CAC stickers. There’s also a neat hoard of GSA Morgan dollars, a Civil War collection, a 1892 Date Set Registry, and our regular weekly auctions. There are coins for everybody, some that may speak to you and some definitely will not.
We’re proud to be able to offer a little something for a wide range of people, and we hope to get the opportunity to help you build your collection. That’s the mission - to work with collectors and help them build collections that will be memorable to them. After all, we are collectors too! It’s not just a marketplace and it’s not about profit. It’s about the hobby, doing what we love, and working with others who love it too. Thanks for reading this week! We hope you have a wonderful week and enjoy the upcoming DLRC auctions.
Numismatically Yours,
John Brush
