Coins We Love: Early Bird Gets the Coins: Baltimore Show Update!
Early bird gets the worm? I guess that proves correct this week as we’ve been here since Monday morning looking for coins and, in that manner, the show has been productive! The coins have been exciting, but the overall event hasn’t been much to write home about just yet. Andy and Jack will be manning the table once the show begins on Thursday and hopefully they’ll have more to report next week.
The overall coin market has been very active and things seem to be holding tight, even with the abrupt drop in the prices of silver and gold this week. Thankfully, our focus isn’t on the bullion market, but we still keep our eyes on it.
Our early appointments at the show were rather special as one of our favorite long-time sellers had come across a deal in recent weeks and we were pleased to receive first shot on it. While we’ve not always agreed in business conversations, the friendship trumps all, and we’ve continued to a do a lot of business over the years. There’s more of the deal coming in the next few months and we’re excited to be along for the ride to see what’s next!
The rest of the early looks in Baltimore were rather quiet but consistent. The folks who are pricing coins that are accurate with the current marketplace are able to literally sell everything they bring. The folks who are pricing for tomorrow’s market are having a tougher time, but there’s still a market for those folks amongst the dealers less in tune with the overall market. It’s difficult to stay on top of everything, but we certainly do our best and it allows us to find new coins in many different sectors.
In the office, I have a note of appreciation that we received from a customer this week. Unfortunately, there have been a few mail thefts in recent months that have occurred in certain locations. One of the customers who have had this occur on several shipments from various dealers this week gave a “shout-out” to Mike and our billing department as our team at DLRC stayed in constant contact with the customer and the money was refunded quickly to the customer. He mentioned another company who didn’t bother to help his situation and he wanted to pass along thanks to our team. We weren’t thrilled with the loss, but we were excited to hear that the customer service from DLRC was everything we’d want and expect. As Jason mentioned to me in our conversation tonight, “we might be smaller, but it means we can try harder…” and he’s right. But no matter our size, we just want to do the right thing. And we appreciate the customers who let us know these things!
That’s all we’ll have for now. Next week you’ll hear about Andy and Jack’s foray into the Midwest and the Northeast over the last 2 weeks picking up collections and consignments from a variety of different collectors. I’m sure Andy is looking forward to finally getting home this week!
Thanks for reading and we hope that you enjoy this week’s Coins We Love!
Numismatically Yours,
