Coins We Love: Happy New Year!
We hope that you’re enjoying your black-eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread…maybe I’m showing my southern roots a bit too much, but the tv advertisement for the buffet across the border in NC is reminding me of my mother's New Year's Day dinner growing up. Alas, we hope that you’re enjoying the first day of the New Year and that your resolutions are holding strong so far!
We’ve been working away this week getting our coins ready for the FUN Show and game-planning for the week-long extravaganza in Orlando, Florida. We’re very much looking forward to escaping the cold here in Virginia Beach for the milder winter temperatures, if at least for just a few days. We stagger our arrivals into Mickey Mouse-land a bit with our first arrivals coming in on Saturday to make sure we don't miss first shot with some of our biggest suppliers. It's early, but we've got to pay for the holiday dinners and Christmas trees on our credit card bill somehow. Seriously, it's earlier than we'd "like" but those first days of the event are key for the coming months and with the market being as active as it is right now, we're preparing for one of our most active shows we've seen in some time.
Outside of the upcoming trip, the market seems to be absolutely insane. We saw gold and silver reach all-time highs and then drop back, and who knows what’s next. One of the smart folks mentioned that the drop back was due to the big players covering shorts finally. I don't know about that, but the movement and excitement within the precious metals market is certainly generating a lot of excitement, even in rare coins. Additionally, we’ve seen a TON of action on the website, with auction bidding and sales throughout the holiday weeks. I think our shipping department is going to give up on us if we don’t get them a break sometime 😊
We'll continue running with the marketplace and see how the new year kick's off this week. We're expecting even more activity overall and we're hopeful that coin collecting continues to be cool again. With a new Mint Director taking office during the celebration of America's 250th Birthday, I think that there are some exciting times on the horizon!
With that, we'll leave you with the reminder that if you see anything on the website that strikes your fancy and you’ll be in Florida, please email us at coins@davidlawrence.com! We’ll be sure to pack it up and have it with us. We’ll be set up at table 521 from Wednesday through Saturday, so we hope to see some of you there.
As for now, we’ll leave these highlights for you to enjoy and we hope to hear from you in the New Year!
Numismatically Yours,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC
