Coins We Love: It's All About Wes!
It’s funny, I hear more comments on the CWL about Wes’s trips these days than I do my own! While my feelings have been hurt by that, I keep reminding Wes that he’s MY free companion on Southwest, not the primary passenger. Sometimes that gives him a little humility! No, seriously, any dad reading this knows I enjoy the comments that people like him more than me. I’m ok with it, honestly! While he detests the things I have to do to run a business sometimes, he’s turned into a real coin nerd and is very helpful to have around! In fact, he does try to keep me straight when I’m on the road, but I’m still a better shipping/packaging help than he is! So, where am I going with this?
After having been grounded at home for a few weeks, it was time for me (and Wes) to hit the road again. On my way to Las Vegas for the PCGS show, we made a pitstop to an undisclosed location and picked up a really nice deal that’ll be upcoming in an RCR auction in two weeks. Two of the highlights from this group were an 1856-S $10 and an incredibly rare 1886 $20. We generally don’t “tease” future coins that are coming up, but these were just so special that I couldn’t help myself!
After that quick pickup, we made our way to the Las Vegas show in a buying effort. These are some of our favorite shows to attend to seek out new material. We generally don’t bring anything to sell as we’re not focusing on the dealer market, but we certainly needed more coins for our active customer base and the show has not disappointed. Overall, we’ve found quite a few new pieces that are quite remarkable, and with all of the major dealers being here, it’s been a fantastic short trip. Before you wonder, “Why did he bring a 16-year-old to Vegas?”, Wes argued that he added more value and was less expensive than any other assistant (I think he really just meant his brother). But, he’s kept me away from any foolishness and we’ve been productive, so we will take it!
Next week our other show contingent will be at the PAN show in a Pittsburgh suburb and from there we’ll have a few weeks off before Baltimore. There’s always something going on, and that includes the action at the office. Including tonight’s auction of the DDR's Full Horn Buffalo Stampede, an Everyman Registry Set of Buffalo Nickels, ending between 8 and 11 pm EST.
If Bison aren’t your thing, I’m sure you’ll find a lot more of Liberty elsewhere on the website. We hope that you enjoy this week’s CWL musings and find something that’s of interest to your collection as well!
Numismatically Yours,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC
