Coins We Love: It's Been A Busy Summer!

Coins We Love: It's Been A Busy Summer!

The summer season of numismatics always hits a slowdown in June and July in preparation for the ANA World’s Fair in August. However, the summer hiatus seems to have ended a week early this year. With Jack continuing to wander around the eastern US through New York, Ohio, Illinois, and now Georgia, and myself in San Francisco this week, we’ve also had a local collection thrown in as well as a huge collection in the Midwest. This is the kind of action we get excited about as coins start flying in from all directions. It will surely make for an active and interesting ANA show later in August.

For a little sneak peek into what we’ve come across this week, here’s a photo of some coins from Jack’s unexpected collection work in Chicago this past weekend.

As for me (JB), I’m in San Francisco teaching 49 young people at the WCU event about coin dealing and coin grading for the next week. While it sounds a bit like volunteer work (it is!), it’s certainly beneficial as I have been able to trade coins into all hours of the night, spend some time in the coin shop, and have had dinners with several clients out here.

It’s been incredibly productive and is hands-down my favorite numismatic week of the year. Unfortunately, I am also reminded that I’m not 25 years old anymore, as it is exhausting! It gives me a greater appreciation for teachers, like my wife, who do/have done this on a regular basis, as teaching is utterly exhausting (but rewarding as well). I’ll have a better recap next week once the event has ended, but I’ll leave you with a few interesting photos from our field trip to Alcatraz, the beautiful weather in San Francisco, and the lunch of champions for these young folks who have decided to make In-N-Out their designated restaurant of choice.

Thanks again for reading, and we hope that you enjoy this week’s Coins We Love!

Numismatically Yours,

John Brush
