Coins We Love - June 28

We’ve had a hectic end of the month that culminated in last week’s Whitman Baltimore Expo. In general, the show was fine for us. We sold a few coins, visited with some friends, and came home with a wide variety of fresh new purchases. However, overall the show seemed a bit lacking. The summer Baltimore event has always been slower, and this year attendance seemed to be down quite a bit more. Of course, it didn’t help that the Long Beach Expo was the week prior. It didn’t really reflect what we think the current market is (we’re still incredibly active buying and selling), and it disappointed us a bit overall. On the bright side, there are no real major shows before the ANA World’s Fair event in August…so we get an opportunity to recharge and get ready for the big event.

This week’s CWL features a few new coins from Baltimore, a few offerings from our Mayberry Modern Collection in auction this week, and a few hand-picked items from across our wide stretch of inventory. We hope that you find something of interest or just feel like chatting with us after viewing the items. If not, just shoot us an email to let us know how we can help you!

Thanks again for viewing and have a great evening!

Sincerely,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC

1883-1912 V Nickel Proof Set NGC/CAC Proof 65-66 (31 Coins, OH)

Why we love it: Collections like this are often torn apart, cracked out for higher grades, and disappear from the market altogether. However, we love seeing groups of coins that remain in these collectible older holders and enjoy leaving meat on the bone for our customers when it comes to value. This is an intriguing, complete set of gorgeous gem proof Liberty Nickels. All the coins are CAC approved except for the 1883 With Cents, 1886, 1889, 1892, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1907, 1909, 1910, and the 1911. This shows that most of the coins are truly high-end examples of their grade making for a strong possibility of a few upgrades. Additionally, the 1897 and 1903 are Gold CAC'd! The entire set is housed in Old NGC Holders and display stunning, pristine surfaces that feature few blemishes and some truly beautiful toning on many of the coins.

Value: This gorgeous, mostly CAC approved gem proof set of Liberty Nickels is available in this week’s auction reserved at just $17,500. This is an incredible opportunity to acquire a nicely toned, fully complete set of this popular and desirable series for a reasonable price!

Mexico: 1747-MO 8 Reales Spanish Colony NGC MS65 (KM# 103)

Why we love it: This is the finest example of this King Philip V. A scarce and desirable 8 Reales piece from Mexico. This popular Spanish Dollar-size coin becomes especially rare in gem condition. This example displays pristine, blemish-free surfaces with a strong strike and great details. The final date of the Phillip V issue, this piece also includes Ferdinand VI in the shield side legend, with the Philip V type priced slightly higher. This is only one other gem example of this type known to exist.

Value: Another example of a similar type sold privately at a recently Long Beach show for a sum in excess of $75,000. Honestly, we thought that it was far too much. However, in comparison, this coin was the exact same rarity and is available at a far discounted value with a reserve of just $32,000 in this week’s auction. It’s a numismatic rarity that is a fascinating survivor.
