Coins We Love: June Travel!

Last week a few members of the DLRC team descended upon Baltimore for the Whitman Summer Expo. It was an active event for the team overall, especially for a summer show. The weather was even pleasant, so braving the streets of downtown wasn't as dreadful as the hot and humid past events have sometimes been. A number of deals ending up falling our way from the get-go, and overall we were quite pleased with the action on both sides of the bourse table. As per usual, the event was well-run, and there was even a nice buzz in the room until Friday afternoon. A new addition for our up-front display location was a case full of paper currency available for viewing that is currently in auction ending TONIGHT! It certainly was a draw for folks, and many expressed their excitement for DLRC entering the currency arena. We enjoyed talking to old friends and meeting some new clients as well!
Towards the end of the Baltimore event, John B and Wes headed off to the ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs. John was there to teach the Intro to Grading Class with Matt Trookman while Wes took the Advanced Grading Class from an elite group of dealers, among them our former team member, Devin Hipp, Keith Moon (not from the Who, but one of the sharpest eyes in the coin world), and Bill Shamhart. While the week has just concluded, Wes's class was bombarded by an incredibly high level of quality coins, mostly in the high uncirculated ranges, while John's class was aimed at introducing folks to the basic concepts of coin grading. Overall, the event was an absolute hit. One of the benefits of the week is meeting a ton of true collectors that are there to learn and enjoy the camaraderie of collecting, but it was also a time to visit with the folks at the ANA Headquarters, and this year the instructors in attendance were an absolute who's who of the next generation of coin dealers. As always, a great time was had by all, with a rather large mix of dealing and networking.
One aside from the Colorado event is that there's always a book sale that features extra items that were donated to the ANA Library on an annual basis...and this year Wes loaded up on rare auction catalogs and reference guides to add to our own library at the office. Otherwise, the biggest acquisition was simply additional knowledge that was brought home. One of JB's favorite things to say about teaching is that you end up learning something new every year. And this year was no different. A small nugget from class was regarding Carson City Morgans. If I had been given 4 guesses as to the lowest mintage one that was produced, I'd have never gotten it. Without looking, does anyone know? It was 1885...who knew?
It's a busy early part of the summer for us at DLRC and with the team holding down the office and returning from shows and other events, we hope that you enjoy this week's message and the Coins and Currency that we love!
Numismatically Yours,
Your Friends at DLRC
