Coins We Love: Live from the FUN Show!
We've spent the last week at the FUN Show in Orlando to kick off the numismatic year. It's been incredibly busy, so we have a limited message today and will elaborate more in our Coins We Love email next week. Please enjoy the highlights from our auction and coins available for direct purchase. We will return next week with more highlights when the dust has cleared.
Sincerely,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC
Why we love it: A relatively affordable example of the first dollar coin produced by the Continental Congress. This is a wholesome VF example of the CURENCY variety, which is the first variety struck and is missing an “R” as the engraver did not leave enough space to fit the entire word on the die. The surfaces of this example are deeply toned and original with wear that is even across the coin.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide values this coin at $30,000 with the most recent sale of a VF25 example bringing $30,550. This example is both fully original and housed in a Retro OGH Holder. Our starting bid for the coin lands right in that same range at just $31,500 in this week’s auction.
Why we love it: Desirable and scarce overdate issue in which it is the only popular overdate variety in the Barber dime series. Widely sought by collectors, this piece is gorgeously white with silky smooth surfaces and phenomenal overall eye appeal. It is also tied for the finest known example for the date.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $7,750. Our best price via the Make Offer function is set at $7,250. That is a full $500 discount off the price guide for this incredible finest known overdate Barber Dime.
Why we love it: A scarce New Orleans Issue Seated Half Dime from a mintage of 220,000 pieces, most of which did not survive heavy circulation or the melting pot. Heavily toned, original surfaces make up the wholesome eye appeal of this rarer piece. Truly choice VF as the wear is noticeable but light and even across its surfaces.
Value: This piece is available via Make Offer for just $950, with the PCGS Price Guide value at $1,050. A discounted price for such a such a scarce Half Dime.
Why we love it: An issue that is typically a type coin but becomes quite rare when in such quality. This near perfect ultra-gem displays stunning eye appeal from its golden toning and blazing luster. This piece is certainly worthy of the most impressive of Registry Sets as just four pieces are graded as such by PCGS with only a single coin grading higher.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide reflects a value of $16,500 without counting in any CAC sticker premium. We are excited to present a fantastic value to potential bidders with a starting bid as low as that same number of $16,500. That is a CAC’d coin for not even a dollar above the price guide.
Why we love it: The 1893-S Morgan Dollar is a famous key date that does more than just transcend its own series as it is so greatly desired by every collector across the entire numismatic spectrum in all grades. This high-end VF example features toned, original surfaces with light, even wear that provides pleasing eye appeal for the grade. It comes from a small mintage of 100,000 coins struck, in which far fewer have survived and is the lowest of all business strike Morgans as is.
Value: This famous key date Morgan Dollar owns a PCGS Price Guide Value of $6,250 in VF35 and jumps to $9,000 in XF40. Our deeply toned choice VF example lands somewhere in the middle as it is CAC approved. The starting bid is set at just $6,150 leaving the potential winning bidder paying possibly no premium at all.
Why we love it: A gorgeous registry-quality Carson City Mint Issue Seated Dime with lovely toning and well-deserved CAC approval. This beautiful color consists of turquoise, gold, and lime tints with booming underlying luster giving the coin premium eye appeal. Only five examples of this date are graded as such with only a single piece graded finer by PCGS.
Value: The most recent sale of this exact date and CAC’d PCGS grade came in one of our weekly auctions in October 2017 and brought $12,500. The PCGS Price Guide is set slightly lower at just $11,500. We are glad to offer this example for well under both above figures for a best price of only $10,000 via Make Offer.
Why we love it: A relatively affordable example of this scarce and desirable two-year type coin Flowing Hair Half Dollar. This wholesome choice fine example of this historic design displays even wear and original surfaces that are accurate for the grade. Its solid remaining details and lovely coloring make for nice eye appeal for such a low grade.
Value: The most recent sale of this exact date and PCGS grade came in auction October 2019 and brought $2,220. Our affordable example of this scarce type coin Flowing Hair Half Dollar is available on our website for outright purchase at that same price range of just $2,250 via Make Offer.
Why we love it: A better date Peace Dollar from the San Francisco Mint with a plus grade and CAC approval. A gorgeous registry quality coin that is high-end for its amazing ultra-gem grade. Beautiful silky surfaces that are covered in gold tones and blazing luster. Just three examples are graded finer by PCGS.
Value: This Peace Dollar possesses a PCGS Price Guide Value of $12,000 in MS66+ and jumps to $35,000 in XF40. Our lustrous registry quality example lands somewhere in the middle as it is CAC approved. The starting bid is set at just $9,750 making for an excellent value as the most recent comparable sale brought $10,281.
Why we love it: The 1918/7-S is a famous overdate Standing Liberty Quarter that is rare and super desirable in all grades. This example comes lightly toned and choice for the grade with wear that is light and even. The lack of detracting marks and wear, and excess of originality and light overall appearance make for nice eye appeal.
Value: The CPG Value is relatively high on their estimate of $5,620 but the PCGS Price Guide is more realistic at $4,750. We are proud to offer this example for under both above figures, even PCGS, for $4,500 via our Make Offer function.
Why we love it: The 1879-S is a common yet popular Morgan Dollar date out of the San Francisco Mint. This gem uncirculated example displays gorgeous Deep Mirror Proof-like surfaces that depict the grades accurately. Mostly blast white with just a faint golden tint making for nice eye appeal.
Value: Our best price via our Make Offer function is set at $1,100. The PCGS Price Guide has this DMPL Morgan valued at $1,100 but the CPG is at $1,380, a solid $280 discount for potential buyers.
Why we love it: One of the more beautiful deeply mirrored Gold Dollars we have handled in a long time. The surfaces are absolutely pristine with incredible contrast between the frosted devices and clear, stunning fields. NGC has graded just five DPL coins of this issue and only one is graded finer than our beauty.
Value: This coin, considering its Deep Prooflike grade designation, defines the phrase “one of a kind” and is incomparable to any price guide as that premium is not recognized by them. However, our starting bid in this week’s auction of $7,750 for this amazingly contrasted prooflike Gold Dollar is in our opinion a fair value.
Why we love it: This gorgeous piece, known as America’s Most Beautiful Coin, is greatly desired among all collectors. This slightly more affordable, nearly choice AU example has attractive surfaces and color that, combined with its fantastic design, make for stunning eye appeal.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide and CPG Value are somewhat comparable on America’s Most Beautiful Coin at this grade with respective estimates of $13,000 and $11,800. This lovely AU example is available for outright purchase with the Make Offer price over a thousand below both price guides at just $10,500, creating what we feel is an excellent value.
Why we love it: A very tough date in the half eagle series, the 1862 was produced to a mintage of just 4,430 pieces. Scarce in all grades in which only three pieces are graded finer by PCGS with a single NGC example graded finer. This Civil War Era coin is not your typical MS60 as the surfaces are of high lustrous quality with limited bag marks.
Value: The CPG Value for this coin is listed at $33,300. Our lustrous uncirculated example of this Civil War Date Half Eagle is in this week’s auction with a starting bid of just $30,000. That is over three thousand dollars below the price guide leaving bidders with plenty of room.
Why we love it: Gorgeous Chinese Gold 800 Yuan with a depiction of the Bronze Age Elephant. Flawless yellow-gold mirrors reflect boldly and contrast against crisp device making for an eye appealing cameo. The condition is near perfect at Proof 69 with no blemishes or marks visible by the naked eye.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $5,873. Our best price via the Make Offer function is set at $5,750. That is a solid hundred-plus dollar discount off the price guide for this stunning nearly finest grade Chinese Gold 800 Yuan.
Why we love it: This attractive yet affordable choice uncirculated type coin from the Braided Hair Half Cent series displays pristine surfaces that offer great luster and some bright red highlights in spots. This pretty Half Cent features nice eye overall appeal with its uninterrupted, sharply detailed devices and clear, immaculate fields.
Value: This piece is available via Make Offer for just $600, with the PCGS Price Guide value at $625. A discounted price for such a lovely Half Cent type coin.
