Coins We Love: Making Cents of the World

I wish I had been counting how many weeks we’ve been at home, but it’s probably best that I didn't. All I know is that it feels like I should be at a coin show. After 20 years of traveling at least once a month, it just feels odd to work a desk job and then go home for dinner. DLRC has adapted quite well, but even though the vault is more organized than ever and the statehood quarter rolls have all been counted, it still feels weird. At least the credit card bill is a bit lighter without the travel expenses though Fedex and USPS are liking our accounts a lot more these days. This week we processed another record number of orders on Monday and have handled twice the normal amount of packages coming through the office. This heavy mail traffic has been wonderful for keeping us on our toes and supplied with fresh coins week in and week out.

The coin market is relatively quiet this week. It typically is a bit slower in July, with the ANA around the corner, but obviously everything is a little different in 2020. So, what are our idle hands doing? Well, first of all, they are far from idle. We’re still looking for things to improve internally. While we do have some website updates coming, our focus this week has been on our imaging department. Over the past 5 years, we’ve made some huge adjustments with our images, and this continues on a weekly basis. While we think that we already offer some of the best photos in the industry, we’re working on adding a few new “flavors” that we think you’ll enjoy as well. I won’t spoil the surprise, but you'll definitely want to keep your eyes peeled for the next few weeks!

Today I had the pleasure of meeting a new customer of ours down the road. On the trip, I was able to speak with a few colleagues that aren’t on my typical “call list” from the office. One of the folks was a large bullion dealer who I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know thanks to my position at ICTA. We discussed the market a bit and he was telling me how busy the bullion business has been over the past few months. While I’m far from an economics expert, the printing of money does seem to cause certain issues and the run on gold and silver this week seems to prove his point. While it’s not my intent to elaborate on buying precious metals, it just shows you that the peripherals of the rare coin business are doing quite well and we think that the long term prognosis of the hobby is a very positive one.

Let’s face it, we all have a little more time on our hands these days. Whether you spend them doing yard work, playing monopoly with the family or catching up on your Coin World reading, we hope that you also take a moment to check out our listings and enjoy a few more of the Coins We Love!

Numismatically Yours,
John Brush
