Coins We Love - May 3

This week at DLRC is another time of recovery from the Central States Show, and a chance for us to catch-up with packages in the office. Morgan Dollars seem to be the item of choice to sell this week as we’ve bought a few collections of those that will be coming to our upcoming auctions. Also, we’ve had a plethora of cheaper (under $250) items that we have been plugging through, so please check out our new listings of Collector Coins here as we’ve literally added hundreds this week. Please keep the packages coming as this is the lifeblood of how we come up with some of the “freshest” and and widest varieties of coins in the business!

Thanks again for reading our short musings this week. Next week will be bringing us 80-90 degree temperatures, and we’re looking forward to a little bit of sunshine!

Sincerely,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC

1907 High Relief $20 PCGS MS62 (Flat Edge)

Why we love it: High Reliefs have always been highly desirable by collectors and investors alike. Not only for their value potential and unique one-year type of design, but because of their artistic beauty. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of the world’s most famous sculptors, the coin is an absolutely beautiful piece and has long been a popular item in the mainstream world. However, unbeknownst to non-gold specialists, the Flat Rim issue is far more difficult to locate than the Wire Edge example. We were able to partner on two MS62 pieces this week, which excited us as the potential for these issues has long been something that we’ve known, but it’s generally ignored by numismatists and dealers alike.

Value: With a PCGS Price Guide of $19,000 and a CPG list of $20,700, we’re offering these for just $17,750 with payment via check this week. It’s a fantastic value for a great sleeper of a date!

This coin displays extremely evident remaining luster which, combined with its gorgeous coloring and pretty rose tints, make for premium eye appeal. This Scarce Half Eagle Issue comes from a low, original mintage of just 17,000 coins struck in which only three are graded finer by NGC.

1797 50c PCGS/CAC Good-06

Why we love it: A famous numismatic rarity that does not come up in auction often, especially with CAC approval. Fresh to the market, from a vest-pocket dealer in the mid-west, this much more affordable example features attractive, completely original coloring and even wear, making it seem high-end for the assigned grade. This Rare Bust Half Issue comes from an incredibly low, original mintage of only 3,918 coins struck.

Value: The PCGS Price Guide reflects a value of $42,000 and comes close to $50,000 in value at the VG level. This CAC approved example is available in this week’s auction with the reserve set at the reasonable amount of just $44,000 in this week’s auction for this arguably under-graded example of this famous Draped Bust Half rarity!

Why we love it: A popular and desirable Draped Bust Half Dollar type coin of the Pointed 6, Stems variety. This coin displays deeply toned, well-struck surfaces that show subtle signs of wear. These characteristics make this piece seem nearly under-graded as proven by its well-deserved CAC approval.

1932-D 25c PCGS/CAC MS65

Why we love it: A desirable Denver Mint Issue Washington Quarter that is widely known as the scarcest date in the business strike set. This beautiful gem example displays lightly toned, lustrous surfaces with premium eye appeal. This Key Date Washington Quarter comes from a moderately low mintage for the issue of just 436,800 coins struck in which only two are graded finer by PCGS.

Value: High-end CAC examples scarcely trade, thus the price guides lag in pricing for the higher quality pieces. However, we view this as an ideal grade to collect as the coins simply do not exist in higher grades without paying ten times more! This high-end, CAC approved example is available in this week’s auction with the reserve set at just $9,500. With only two pieces graded finer, this arguably under-graded Key Date Washington Quarter is sure to go quickly in our auction.
