Coins We Love: Return of the Coin Show and a Hot Market

Well, I had a nice little message about the summer in Virginia Beach written, but then an email came through regarding the sale of the majority of NGC to Blackstone (an Investment Group). We’ve heard rumors about this for a week or two, but we didn’t know if it would come to fruition. Turns out that the rumors were true and another grading service has been acquired by an outside group. It’s not the first time that big businesses have entered the hobby-space, but it’s the first time in years that there seems to be a lot of attention thrown at collectibles. It simply goes to show you that the hobby (or industry as you might call it) is incredibly hot and there seems to be room for growth…otherwise these folks wouldn’t be jumping in. It gives us reason for cautious optimism if it’s done in a way that helps broaden the collector base and brings more attention to our hobby. Of course, we don’t really know anything at the moment so we’ll sit back and watch how the leaves fall and we’ll reserve overall judgment after a little time has passed. As for now, we’ll hold out hope that there will be added opportunities, growth, and expansion of the hobby.

On the DLRC front we have a few folks in the office taking vacation time, so you might not be able to reach your same friendly voices (and you might get a few guest-written CWL descriptions), but overall we’re simply moving forward and continuing to play with these amazing pieces of history. I think that 18 months without major coin shows has taken a toll on a number of folks and they're getting a little stir crazy! Anyhow, we’re excited to get warmed up and will be attending the Summer FUN show next week in Orlando. It’s not the beginning of the year January show in size or attendance, but this is the first major coin show since February 2020 and we’re excited to take part. Jason, Julia, Amandeep, and I will be there for a few days and we’re looking forward to seeing a few smiling faces (or masks?). If there’s anything we have listed on our website that you’d like to see in-hand, give us a quick email, phone call, or smoke signals and we’ll do our best to bring the coin to you! How’s that for service? Of course, if you’re looking to send us a package or a consignment and want to drop it off there instead, give us a heads-up and we’ll make that work as well. However, please be patient with us. We haven’t done a coin show like this in a long time, so we might need to get our juices flowing a little bit to figure out how we used to do things.

If you won’t be there, we’re now planning our display at the World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, IL in August as well. It’s a month away but it’ll involve some serious planning, so keep that in the back of your mind as well. All of this being said, we hope to see or hear from you in the coming weeks and we’re looking forward to getting back on the horse again!

Numismatically Yours,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC
