Coins We Love: Sometimes You Play Ball and Sometimes it Rains
Today’s CWL has had enough revisions for the week that I’m not even sure where to start… It began with this:
"To paraphrase what I think is one of the greatest movie quotes of all-time, “if you list it, they will come…” That’s our motto for today because if you call us immediately after this email goes out, we’ll be at a company outing enjoying America’s Pastime, watching our local AAA baseball team play in a “Businessperson’s Special”."
Then we got to: “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains”
Today it rains. So, we’re here. And we’re shipping coins left and right because we’re more of a contact hitter anyway. Some folks go for the grand slam on each and every coin…and as much as the financial statements might like that, we’re more of a contact hitter that will be playing for a long, long time. It’s about the relationship and getting on base.
The “List it…” quote also covers “part” of what we do as a company, but it doesn’t encompass us as a whole. The technology that our programmers have developed allows us to list everything, but there’s a lot more that goes into what we’re listing every week. We say no quite often. Whether the issue is quality, price, or we may simply be the wrong place for an item. The same goes for matching coins with collectors…sometimes the coin just isn’t the right fit for a collector…and that’s ok!
Our goal is to make good coin “marriages” and partner coins with the right caretaker for now. Because we want that coin to come back to us, whether as a purchase, consignment, or whatever form it may take. And if we don’t want the coin back, we also don’t want to place it with a customer! In the big picture, we find that to be smart business. That’s the benefit of having been around the block for 47 years. Coins that have gone away for a time tend to make their way back! So, when you come to us to buy a coin, it might be an item we’ve offered several times before. It happens. And that’s not a bad thing! Our goal is to offer quality coins and to build collections for our customers. And just because a coin has come back to us, it doesn’t mean it is stale.
As far as consignments go, we say no there as well. Sometimes the value isn’t right…or the coin isn’t right. Sometimes the coin speaks to us…sometimes it doesn’t. But we’re going to do our best to listen! We’re not a magic marketplace…we’re here to look deeper than just listing and selling coins. We’re numismatically-inclined, like our customers, and we want to talk coins, not holders. Because the plastic won’t last as long as the coins have…So, please know that we can’t and won’t do everything. But we’ll do what fits our mission and we’ll always do our best to serve the collector! We’re also happy to learn together with you! So, let’s keep playing with coins…and build that two-way relationship, whether it is buying or selling. That’s what we’re here for! And a stolen base or two won’t hurt…
But for now, we’re going to enjoy the much-needed rain. So, let us know what we can do for you. We’re here for it!
