Coins We Love: The Prodigal Package!

We’re generally not in the habit of telling stories about shipping, but every once in a while we have to share the escapades of some of our packages. As most of you know, we do our absolute best to get packages out in an expeditious manner. Sometimes it's the day ordered or it may be 2-3 days later depending on payment timing, government holidays, bank processing, etc. We’ve found that good communication always helps in this understanding and we try to do that as best we can. Generally speaking, I think our shipping department does a pretty fantastic job in getting packages sent, but even more importantly, they get them there safely.
When you’re shipping as many packages as we are, you do see some weird things occur every once in a while. We once had a package going to New Jersey (from Virginia!) that took a detour to Puerto Rico and have had packages that visited post offices in Spain that were apparently flood-damaged and returned to us (moldy $5 bills are strangely difficult to return to the Federal Reserve). Most recently, we had a FedEx package headed to Arizona that got stuck in Mississippi (not even at the Memphis hub!) for weeks. This was a $20k+ order that was shipped according to our normal set of rules, only to find out that we were too quick in sending, as the customer was on vacation in another country. After a few days of the package not getting delivered, we found out and recalled the package, and it ended up in Mississippi. Maybe the coin was a long, lost Elvis fan and wanted to tour Tupelo, or maybe he just really liked William Faulkner. Anyway, we’ve been working on getting this package returned to us for 4 weeks now, and this morning as I walked in, it was sitting in Mike’s (our shipping manager) hands. You can be sure that there was much rejoicing! It finally returned home and now we’ll get it shipped back again in hopes of making it to its new caretaker.
So, why the parable on the prodigal package?
- We want to thank our shipping department for the bang-up job that they do every day. Mike, Angeleah, Dylan, and Brady do a wonderful job and we’re thankful for them.
- A reminder to all of us that no matter the efficiency of logistics companies, there’s a huge human element involved and we all need a little grace sometimes.
- Know that we’re trying our best to deliver these special items. We absolutely love what we do and we love sharing the hobby with each and every one of you. We’re always doing our best to get everything delivered to you in a timely manner, but sometimes things don’t go as planned!
- We always encourage questions, comments, and delay requests to come to us at shipgroup@davidlawrence.com.
- I hear that Biloxi is nice this time of year…
Thanks again for reading and for your patience! We hope that you enjoy this week’s coins we love!
Numismatically yours,
John Brush
