Coins We Love: Turkey Day Edition
On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we always want to send out a note of thanks to our customers. Without you, we wouldn't be able to play with these historic objects that we so passionately love and enjoy. So, before we get into the turkey and football tomorrow, we want to pass along our thanks to you, our readers, customers, and friends.
This week we’ve found ourselves trying to get a little bit ahead by getting the auctions set up a week in advance so that we can enjoy the 4-day weekend. Well, the auctions are running (with some amazing highlights mentioned below!), we have a massive Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sale set up, and the turkey is thawing in the fridge. While a "sale" is an unusual thing for us and hasn't occurred on our website in over five years, we decided to discount EVERYTHING that is available as a buy-it-now item between 5-15% off the regular prices. You'll see the discounted price on the website if you’re browsing…no coupon codes needed, no extra work involved. We decided to leave the “Make Offer” button available, and we'll consider these as usual, but in most cases, we’ve tried to discount to an exceptionally reasonable number for the coin.
You’ll also see discounted prices on eBay if you frequent our store there, but keep in mind, you can always save at least 5% by just going directly. If the eBay bucks are what you want, go for it. Why we love it: Famous and popular key date Standing Liberty Quarter. The 1916 is highly sought after by all collectors of key date coinage as a low mintage first-year issue. Full head examples are especially tough. This piece exhibits gorgeous rainbow highlights, especially around the rim and must be viewed in-hand to truly appreciate. Gorgeous like no other example of this key date that we've had in quite some time, it is truly a stunning beauty.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide and CPG values on this coin are extremely comparable at a respective $36,500 and $36,900. This closeness in estimates should bring potential bidders great assurance on the accuracy of those numbers. The starting bid in this week’s auction is set reasonably at just $31,500.
Why we love it: A historic piece from the Gold Rush era in San Francisco also being a scarce Double Eagle from the D.L. Hansen Collection. Bright frosted yellow-gold surfaces with lots of luster making for phenomenal eye appeal. From a mintage of just 141,468 in which only six examples are graded finer by PCGS.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide and CPG values of this coin are at a respective $57,500 and $54,400. This closeness in these values should bring great assurance on the accuracy of those numbers. The starting bid in this week’s auction is set at just $50,850.
Why we love it: Scarce and desirable proof Quarter Eagle with pristine ultra-cameo surfaces. Sharp, intricate details that contrast dramatically against brilliant deep mirrors. Flawless yellow-gold surfaces and unmatched eye appeal, sure to be the highlight of any collection. Finest graded at either service from a mintage of 150 coins struck.
Value: This coin, considering its single finest known grade of Proof 69 UCAM, defines the phrase “one of a kind” and is incomparable to any price guide. However, our starting bid in this week’s auction of $97,500 for this amazingly toned high-grade cameo Seated Half is in our opinion a fair value.
Why we love it: A beautiful satiny gem with gorgeous fields and unbelievable eye appeal, this better date D-mint is perfect for the advanced collector. Deserving of its CAC approval and once part of the D.L. Hansen Collection. Only a single MS67 is graded finer by PCGS, and it resides in the number one set.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $13,000 in MS66 and at $50,000 in MS67. PCGS factors in nothing for the premium of CAC approval. Our gorgeous example of this slightly scarcer date Barber Half has a starting bid of just $22,500.
Why we love it: This rare proof-only issue Liberty Seated Dollar displays stunning, pristine near-cameo surfaces with almost no detracting blemishes. Its immaculate surfaces that feature frosty devices and flashy fields give this CAC approved gem proof perfect eye appeal. From a mintage of just 300 in which only two examples are graded finer by PCGS.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide value for this coin in PR65 is set at $37,500. The starting bid for our example in this week’s auction is set at $39,000. The disparity is because our coin is CAC’d and PCGS does not factor any premium for such approval.
Why we love it: An incredible deep mirror proof-like example of this popular Philadelphia minted Morgan Dollar. Premium plus-graded gem with amazingly clear, watery mirrors and frosty devices. Tied for finest known and equal in eye appeal with the Hansen Collection example.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide values this coin at $28,500 with its plus grade attribute. We have a starting bid set for our stunning CAC’d example at just $23,800. That is nearly five thousand dollars less than the price guide, which leaves potential bidders with plenty of room for an excellent deal.
Why we love it: A rare deep proof-like example of this popular Double Eagle issue. Deep reflective fields with extraordinary orange hues. There are only three Deep Prooflike examples graded by both services all of which are graded by NGC. The NGC Prooflike Population in MS62 is 14 coins, only 23 Prooflike Graded of the entire mintage of 1899 $20 Liberty Double Eagles. Only 35 Type 3 $20 Liberties have been graded Deep Prooflike.
Value: This coin, considering its rare surfaces giving it the grade of MS62 DPL, defines the phrase “one of a kind” and is unmatched in any price guide. However, our best price via Make Offer of $6,250 for this gorgeous DMPL Double Eagle is a reasonable value.
Why we love it: Scarce one-year Buffalo nickel type coin from a mintage of just 1,520 coins struck in proof format. An attractive example of this scarce proof issue with superb eye appeal coming from its gorgeous golden tints with a light hint of rose on the devices.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide and CPG value on this coin are extremely comparable at a respective $4,500 and $4,380. This closeness in estimates should bring potential bidders great assurance on the accuracy of those numbers. Our best price is set reasonably at just $3,600 via Make Offer.
Why we love it: A gorgeously toned ultra-gem example of this proof Liberty Seated Half Dollar from the D.L. Hansen Collection. Beautiful rose, green, and blue tints with splashes of gold, this piece is high end in quality and impressive in eye appeal. From a mintage of just 832 proofs struck, this coin is the finest known example graded by PCGS with the cameo designation.
Value: This coin, considering its finest condition, CAC approval and D.L. Hansen pedigree, is simply unmatched by any other and would be difficult to compare with any price guide. However, our starting bid in this week’s auction of $13,000 for this amazingly toned high-grade cameo Seated Half is a great starting point, and we believe that this coin will find a new home quickly.
Why we love it: A gorgeous deep cameo proof example of this popular proof type coin from the D.L. Hansen Collection. One of our favorite designs when deeply cameo'd, this piece displays fantastic contrasts and amazing overall eye appeal. Mintage of just 735 coins struck in proof format.
Value: The most recent sale in auction of this date and CAC’d PCGS grade sold for $5,288 in 2014. The PCGS Price Guide value is quite comparable to this auction record at $5,000 even. Our best price via Make Offer creates an excellent value for the potential buyer at $4,500.
Why we love it: The 1901-S half is truly one of our favorite issues in the entire Barber half series. Scarce and vastly underrated with lovely golden-orange rim tints and fantastic luster in the center devices. This piece is certainly gorgeous for the grade with premium eye appeal.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $6,750 in its choice uncirculated condition. We gladly offer a best price via the Make Offer function of just $6,500. That is a solid $250 discount off the price guide for this scarce underrated Barber Half.
Why we love it: This gorgeous piece, known as America’s Most Beautiful Coin, is greatly desired among all collectors. This slightly more affordable, nearly uncirculated example has attractive surfaces and color that, combined with its fantastic design, make for stunning eye appeal. The tremendous eye appeal and surfaces of this coin were recognized by CAC as they approved it as a high-end example of the grade.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide reflects a value of $14,000 without counting in any CAC sticker premium. Our beautiful and more affordable example of America’s Most Beautiful Coin with CAC approval is available on our website for just $11,500 through our Make Offer function.
Why we love it: An attractively wholesome example of this much better date Indian Cent that will not break the bank. This pretty choice VF has original chocolate brown coloring and relatively light wear especially on the reverse, which makes this piece an accurate example of the grade.
Value: The CPG Value comes in at $390 with the PCGS Price Guide right in the same ballpark of $400 for this scarcer Indian Cent. With a best price via Make Offer of $300, this is a perfect opportunity to acquire a great coin at an even better value being around $100 below both price guides.
Why we love it: An ideal type coin for the Liberty Seated Half Dime Series with the Star-Obverse. This choice uncirculated example displays attractive surfaces that feature underlying luster and rich toning. The coloring consists of blue green on the obverse and dark rose on the reverse.
Value: Available for $275 via Make Offer, we think this is a great price for this type coin especially considering the unique color. The PCGS Price Guide has its evaluation set $40 higher at $325 further showing what an excellent value this is to fill in a hole in a Liberty Seated Half Dime Type Set.
Why we love it: A famous, highly desired key date whose rarity and popularity transcends the Mercury Dime series. This example is true to the assigned grade and features evenly worn and completely original surfaces. This incredibly popular and rare issue comes from a smaller, original mintage of just 264,000 coins struck making it the lowest in the entire series.
Value: This relatively affordable example of this famous key date has a PCGS Price Guide value of $1,000. We gladly match that number via Make Offer in order to present this amazing coin at a fair price to the key date collector who does not want to break the bank.
Why we love it: A gorgeous, lustrous example of this Franklin Half Dollar that is especially scarce in gem condition. This lovely gem displays strong luster and pristine, blast white surfaces. Between the lack of blemishes and incredible luster and eye appeal, this coin truly represents the grade well. Tied for the finest known graded by PCGS without Full Bell Lines.
Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $650. It is available for purchase at the reasonable price of just $525 via Make Offer. That is a solid $125 discount off the PCGS Price Guide value for this beautiful gem example of this better date Franklin Half Dollar which is tied for the finest graded by PCGS.
