Coins We Love: ANA Is Just Around the Corner—Here’s What’s Happening at DLRC
There are really only two busy seasons in numismatics, where there is a time crunch to get things moving…before the FUN Show in December/January and before the ANA Show in July/August. We’re in the throes of putting everything together, making sure our coins are priced and also getting coins to auction to keep things flowing at home. All in all, it’s a busy time, but it’s also a bit exhilarating. Along these lines, we’d like to throw out an early reminder that if there are any coins of interest that you see available on our website and you’ll be attending the event in Steel City in two weeks, please emails us at coins@davidlawrence.com and we’ll be sure to bring them along with us!
Along with the thoughts on the busy season, we also realize that it’s important to take care of our team at DLRC…that’s why we’ll be hosting an office-wide event at the Norfolk Tides AAA baseball game this Thursday. While we enjoy some hot dogs, peanuts, and Cracker Jacks, please forgive us for not answering the phones for a few hours. We’ll be back in the office Friday morning though!
Other activities in the market: We’ve seen gold making a little runback to the $4,400 level lately. It’s a slow move, but the gradual increases have certainly been in our view lately and we’re hoping to see them to continue. Unfortunately, the school year is starting back for many, so the late appearance of the ANA Show in the last week of August will likely cause the attendance to stumble a bit. However, I’m not sure even that could stall the current coin marketplace. Overall, coins are still moving quickly…especially those in the “affordable” range of $5,000 and under. Quality and eye appeal are still important, but far less so on these lower range items. The coins over $10k are doing just fine as well, but it’s not as “fast and loose” as the more affordable collectible items.
We’ve seen a huge run on the vanity labels that some dealers are producing as part of their surprise pack promotions…these consist of many colors under the rainbow, so while the bland backgrounds of certified coins are being changed widely, we’re still trying to maintain some consistencies in the hobby. So, if you see a label that’s unfamiliar and you have a question, don’t hesitate to let us know. We get quite a few of these reholdered, so if you’re not happy with your coin, let us know and we’ll try to get it adjusted for you as well! Clean, fresh holders are never a bad thing, especially when you’re thinking about selling. You may be surprised to know this, but our grading submission levels are generally quite low…but we certainly keep the “reholder factory” open.
Thanks again for reading! We’d love to hear from you if you have any thoughts…otherwise we’ll be back next week!
Numismatically Yours,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC
