Coins We Love - October 19

This week’s CWL is coming to you a day later than normal, and we apologize for the intrusion before your weekend! However, it’s been a busy week as always at DLRC and with the Baltimore show coming up next week, we’ve decided to bring more coins for sale than ever and have simply overwhelmed our capacity for a day or so. Sprinkle that in with watching the “Good Doctor” (thanks for letting us know about this Doogie Howser-like remake), we’ve been fairly captivated.

That being said, we hope that you enjoy our coins that we’re featuring this week. Next week we’ll have even more and hope to keep you entertained with a note from the Baltimore show. As for now, we leave you with a graphic so that you can find our table next week! As always, please email us at coins@davidlawrence.com if you have anything that you’d specifically like us to bring with us to the show and we’d be happy to do so! Thanks again for reading and we hope that you all have a wonderful weekend!

P.S. Go Vols! Beat Bama…

Sincerely,
John Brush and Your Friends at DLRC

Why we love it: An attractive example of this scarce and desirable type coin from the Draped Bust Gold Eagle series. This lustrous, relatively affordable example is well-struck for the issue and features nice remaining luster with the appropriate amount of bagmarks noticeable mostly in the field. An ever-popular issue amongst collectors, this piece comes from a low mintage of just 37,449 coins originally struck.

Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $30,500 with the CPG Value just above that at $31,500. This pretty, lustrous example of this scarce Draped Bust Eagle type coin is available in this week’s auction reserved lower than both price guides at just $26,500!

Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at an even $1,000 with the CPG coming in at $1,170! It is available for purchase via Make Offer for the low price of just $900! That is a solid $100 discount off the PCGS Price Guide Value for this frosty, white gem of this Proof Barber Dime!

Why we love it: A lovely near-gem example of this popular design type that is technically a pattern issue. Examples from 1857 in this condition are actually scarcer than those of the more popular 1856. This fresh example displays lustrous, reflective fields with attractive, original surfaces. From an extremely low original mintage of just 485 coins struck, there are only 20 others graded finer by PCGS in which all are graded PR65 with a single Proof 66 Cameo!

Value: The PCGS Price Guide comes in at only $11,000 in this particular grade, which is grossly undervaluing the most recent auction records on this piece. With the last examples selling in advance of $14,000 in auction, this coin is clearly underestimated by the price guides. This CAC approved PR64 example is a lovely example of a scarce date that rarely comes available in any grade and possesses the surfaces and overall eye appeal of a true gem. It is available for purchase at the low price of just $13,250 via the Make Offer function!

Why we love it: An unbelievably gorgeous Indian Gold Eagle issue, which makes for the perfect type coin. The eye appeal is of the highest quality imaginable as the coin is nearly perfect pristine and blemish-free and displays excessive amounts of luster. There is only one example of this issue graded finer at PCGS, which is the lone MS67 piece. For what it’s worth, we submitted this coin to CAC two times for review for the coveted sticker but were unfortunately left disappointed in our evaluation of the coin.

Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at an even $16,000 with the plus grade. It is available in this week’s auction reserved far below that estimate at just $12,850! That is over $3,000 off the PCGS Price Guide Value for this stunning, immaculate gem!

Why we love it: A beautifully rainbow toned gem proof piece of the popular Twenty Cent denomination. The surfaces are pristine, and the eye appeal is perfect as the color from both sides of the coin includes gorgeous electric blue and magenta tints with light flashes of gold. From a low original mintage of just 1,260 coins struck, there are only 18 others graded finer by PCGS.

Value: A recent sale of the same date and grade combination brought $6,168.75 in auction, in which the PCGS Price Guide and CPG Value have the coin valued even higher at $8,500 and $7,690 respectively. It is available for purchase below not just both price guides but also this past sale at just $5,850 via Make Offer!

This CAC approved gem example is gorgeous as it is heavily toned with string underlying luster that shines through. There is only one example of this Morgan Dollar issue graded finer at PCGS, which is a single MS67 piece.

Value: A recent sale this past May of the same date and grade brought $4,817.50 in auction, in which the PCGS Price Guide has the coin valued even higher at $5,500. It is available for purchase for the comparable and fair price just $5,000 via Make Offer!

Why we love it: A scarce Civil War Era Double Eagle that becomes a true rarity in higher grades. This nice, original example displays a lustrous, crusty golden skin with no real signs of wear and few notable blemishes making the eye appeal perfect for the grade. From a low original mintage of just 204,235 coins struck, there are only 28 others graded finer by PCGS.

Value: The PCGS Price Guide has this coin valued at $20,000 in AU58 and at $22,500 in MS60. This CAC approved AU58 example is arguably under-graded as it possesses the lustrous surfaces and overall eye appeal of a Mint State coin. This example is especially lustrous and offers ideal yellow-gold coloring, which is combined with surprisingly few blemishes for the grade. From a low original mintage of just 118,143 coins struck, there are only 16 others graded finer by PCGS.
