Coins We Love: The Latest Hansen Collection Purchase

With all of the excitement from the FUN Show winding down, this week has given us some time to lick our wounds and catch up on some much-needed coin work in the office. It’s been an incredibly productive time back home and I think you’ll notice some of our hard work over the next few auctions!

As far as other news in the coin world, we just announced the purchase of the last piece of Charlotte Gold needed to complete the C-Mint collection for the D.L. Hansen set. The 1849-C Open Wreath Gold Dollar—graded by PCGS as MS62—was offered in a recent auction and we brought it back home to DLRC. This coin was previously offered in the Richmond Collection 20 years ago when it was graded by NGC as MS63PL. This last piece of the Charlotte collection was one we've had our eyes on for quite some time but as there are only four examples (this being the finest), it does not come to market often. Considered the “King of Southern Gold”, it is by far the rarest issue from the Charlotte or Dahlonega Mint and we were thrilled to obtain it in the post-FUN auctions. You can read our press release HERE.

Unfortunately, the purchases for the D.L. Hansen Collection are far more scarce these days as there simply aren’t many items available that would improve or fill holes in the set. However, this piece was a perfect example of knowing when we needed to step up for quality and rarity.

In other news for the collection, we are in the process of crossing over some of the key sets to CAC Grading. Along with this process, we have launched many of the Registry Sets on the CAC Grading website. If you’re still interested in following along with the progress we’re making with the set, please check it out over there.

While maintaining the D.L. Hansen Collection is certainly one of the highlights of what DLRC does, it also opens up the door for us to offer the same services we offer our partner to our customers. It’s not a one-way street here in Virginia Beach, so if there’s anything we can assist with to help you build, grow, or sell your collection, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’ll treat you like a partner as well!

Numismatically Yours,

John Brush
