Coins We Love: Numismatic Field Trips Pt. 2
Honestly, I didn’t know what I was getting into when I ran for the ANA Board. I knew that I wanted to help make a difference in the largest coin-collecting organization in the world, but I didn’t really know what that would entail. After the election, we were told that there was an onboarding event that we were required to attend to help us understand more about the organization. Having not been part of such an event in the past, I thought it would be interesting and I was ready for a trip to Colorado Springs. The event was handled well and we learned a ton and feel more prepared for a successful future on the board.
There’s not a lot to write about for the onboarding event as it’s one of those “you had to be there” things. However, I can say the ANA Summer Seminar event is a can’t-miss in your numismatic career. Not just for the classes, but to see the ANA Museum, the Library, and the Mini-Mint. It is a special place.
The highlight of the trip was something that wasn’t even on the onboarding calendar. It just so happened that the days in Colorado overlapped a numismatic celebrity’s 95th birthday. So, we were able to go out to dinner (as a board) and celebrate the evening with Mr. Redbook, Ken Bressett. Maybe it’s the brisk air, the numismatics in his blood, or the fact that he walks 4-5 miles every day, but Ken (as he asked me to call him) is truly a marvel. Not only did we have a nice dinner, but we went to the Broadmoor Resort to explore the magnificent halls. I’ve not had the opportunity to spend time with him before, but it was an honor and an enjoyable time to spend with a numismatic legend. I only wish I had taken more photos!
Back in Virginia Beach, things are back to normal! We’ve been plowing through packages, buying some rather large long-term collections, and attending the Tidewater Coin Club Show this past weekend. The intensity and busyness of the coin market seems to be increasing and we’re excited as we have some fun things coming up shortly that we’ll be announcing in the coming weeks.
Numismatically Yours,
John Brush
